Cell Migration: Katanin Gives Microtubules a Trim

New evidence suggests that katanin - best known for severing microtubules in their more stable regions - localizes at the leading edge of migratory cells and trims microtubules at their dynamic plus ends.

An Essential Role for Katanin in Severing Microtubules in the Neuron

Several lines of evidence suggest that microtubules are nucleated at the neuronal centrosome, and then released for transport into axons and dendrites. Here we sought to determine whether the microtubule-severing protein known as katanin mediates microtubule release from the neuronal centrosome. Immunomicroscopic analyses on cultured sympathetic neurons show that katanin is present at the centr...

Cell Biology: Cytoskeleton Network Topology Feeds Back on Its Regulation

Many cell functions rely on microtubule dynamics and ordering. Two recent studies show that microtubule severing by katanin plays an overbearing role in this process and is primarily regulated at microtubule crossovers.

Katanin controls mitotic and meiotic spindle length

Accurate control of spindle length is a conserved feature of eukaryotic cell division. Lengthening of mitotic spindles contributes to chromosome segregation and cytokinesis during mitosis in animals and fungi. In contrast, spindle shortening may contribute to conservation of egg cytoplasm during female meiosis. Katanin is a microtubule-severing enzyme that is concentrated at mitotic and meiotic...

Katanin regulates dynamics of microtubules and biogenesis of motile cilia

The in vivo significance of microtubule severing and the mechanisms governing its spatial regulation are not well understood. In Tetrahymena, a cell type with elaborate microtubule arrays, we engineered null mutations in subunits of the microtubule-severing complex, katanin. We show that katanin activity is essential. The net effect of katanin on the polymer mass depends on the microtubule type...
